In their words
A pair of paintings on display at Stone’s Breath, “Friend or Foe,” shows an example of this. Two faces, each with one orange and one blue eye, are otherwise nearly identical. Sesow describes the work to mean that we don’t often know who our enemies are, and the truths are often below the surface. He completed the paintings on Sept. 10 of last year.

Research notes
- Stone’s Breath was opened in Ocean View, Delaware by sculptor Michael Breathe and his wife Narnia, who had moved from Manassas, Virginia, “with the aim of bringing Washington D.C. art to the lower Delaware shore.” It had its soft opening on Memorial Day weekend 2002 and its first artists’ reception on June 8, with Matt shown alongside photographer Lisa G. Traynham, ceramicist Margaret Boozer and pop artist Dan Hicks.
- Matt finished the two “Friend or Foe” paintings on September 10, 2001, the day before the September 11 attacks.
