Poissons d’avril made in USA

PAINTING: Matt Sesow at Galerie Saint-Pierre until April 23. April Fools’ fish, made in USA.
Funny April fish are decorating the walls of Galerie Saint-Pierre in Limoges right now, pulled from the depths of the fabulous bestiary of American artist Matt Sesow.
While the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris was recently celebrating the talent of Jean-Michel Basquiat, it is the work of an artist of that generation and that lineage — street art and “bad painting” — that Galerie Saint-Pierre has the honor of presenting in Limoges this April.
A first exhibition in France. Matt Sesow, “born in the USA” in 1966, is well on his way to an international reputation. It was in Barcelona, the Catalan capital always at the cutting edge of the contemporary-art scene, that Annie and Philippe Bongrand met him and persuaded him to give the capital of the arts of fire [Limoges, the porcelain and enamel city] the privilege of a first exhibition in France of his burning work.
In Limoges, under the title “Made in USA,” it is impossible to stay deaf and unmoved by the cries escaping from the walls of Galerie Saint-Pierre. Inhabited by Matt Sesow’s magnificent and terrible creatures, they tell us little stories that are very personal to the artist and very much of our century.
“Life, violence, they go together,” sang Claude Nougaro. Don’t count on Matt Sesow, the infernal and improbable offspring of Bengt Lindström and Bernard Buffet, to convince you otherwise.
